When you walk into Matthews Elementary School, the feeling of community is immediate. We cherish this rare characteristic in a school of MES' size. To continually foster this special atmosphere, the MPTO hosts several school-wide events throughout the year, as well as sponsors committees that help make everyone feel at home at our school.
Making Newcomers Welcome
Summer Ice Cream Social: Starting kindergarten or attending a new school can be daunting for everyone in the family. The MPTO summer ice cream social gives new students and their parents a chance to make new friends before the first day of school. This year it will be held on August 14th at 10am on the playground!
Kindergarten Help: Getting to class from the carpool line or bus lot, or figuring out how to order lunch in the cafeteria is made stress free for our kindergartners. With an army of parent volunteers, the MPTO makes sure someone is there to guide your child through both. Volunteers are always needed for this task for the first 2 weeks of school.

Bringing Everyone Together
Stingerfest: The most highly anticipated event of the school year, Stingerfest is a day of fun, games, prizes, and more. Held every year on school grounds, students and parents can enter raffles for great prizes (iPad, vacations, and more), play games, enjoy bounce houses and even put their favorite teacher or administrator in jail. News about Stingerfest is provided in the weekly Tuesday folders and MPTO newsletter. Bring the whole family, it’s a fun afternoon for everyone!
Spirit, Bingo, & Family Nights: Several times a year, the MPTO hosts Spirit Nights at area restaurants and other merchants. Not only does this allow MES students, parents and staff to socialize, it also raises money for our school as a percentage of the night's sales are donated to MES. In January we have Bingo Night. Bring your whole family, play bingo with your children and win prizes! Last year, we also held our first Glow Dance! It is a great night for students, families, and teachers to get together and dance the night away!
Blue & Gold: MES' Annual Field Day, Blue and Gold, allows all of our students compete in fun games, enjoy a cool treat and end the school year on a fun note. Your child's teacher will let you know whether your child is on the Blue or Gold team, and your room parent will let you know how you can help your class on Blue and Gold day.
Yearbook: Every child wants a memento of their school year, which is why the MPTO produces the Matthew Elementary School Yearbook. With every child's school photograph, classroom photographs and candid photographs of the year's major events, this is an annual student favorite. Look for the opportunity to buy your child's Yearbook during the fourth quarter of the school year.
Taking Care of Each Other
Landscaping Days: With mature trees and other beautiful vegetation, our school grounds are an oasis in the middle of downtown Matthews. To keep the grounds looking their best, the MPTO hosts a fall and spring Landscaping Day. These Saturday events involve general yard clean up, as well as planting and pruning of shrubs and trees. Green thumbs and dads are especially welcome at this event to help teach our students about landscaping/horticulture and to do some of the heavy lifting required with this crucial task.
Lost & Found: What happens to a lost jacket left on the playground or a lunch box abandoned in the cafeteria? It goes to the MPTO Lost and Found, which is located by the Cafeteria. All lost items are kept for one month and then if not claimed, they are donated to the Matthews Help Center.
Food & Coat Drives: The MPTO assists in collecting canned food items every November for the Matthews Help Center. We also collect gently used coats that are used in our local community every winter.
Health Room: The school nurse is on site every day at MES and students not feeling well can visit the Health Room at any time with permission from their teacher. The MPTO helps stock the Health Room with needed supplies from band aids to the pulse rate monitor.
